Graeme McDowell last night backed Rory McIlroy to bounce back from another Masters disappointment, saying his fellow Irishman was “tailor-made” for Augusta National.

World number two McIlroy had entered the Masters intent on making amends for his final round collapse in 2011 when, having led for 54 holes he posted a last-day, eight over par 80.

Yet having got himself into contention at four under after two rounds this year, one shot behind halfway leaders Fred Couples and Jason Dufner, McIlroy fell off the pace on Saturday with a third-round 77 from which he could not recover.
