McIlroy move shocks Hoey

RECENT Race To Dubai winner Michael Hoey was gob-smacked to learn reigning US Open champion Rory McIlroy is to join him at Horizon Sports Management.

News of McIlroy’s move to Horizon surely will now ensure the current World No. 3 contests next June’s Irish Open despite rejoining the PGA Tour from January.

Hoey delivered Horizon Sports their first-ever one-two Race to Dubai finish by denying fellow management stable mate McDowell, three weeks ago at St Andrew’s to captured the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship.

But after posting a second round 74 to drop to one under par on day two of the Castello Masters, the Belfast golfer could not believe the news when asked what he thought of McIlroy’s move.

“That news is a real shock and unbelievable but then it’s a huge coup for Horizon,” said Hoey. “Graeme was no doubt the factor in that as he and Rory are the best of friends. But it’s fabulous for Horizon Sports as it’s an Irish company and it’s good that another Irish golfer like Rory is joining the stable.”

Spain’s Sergio Garcia played the perfect tournament host in posting a 63 to lead by two strokes at 12-under par in Valencia.
