THE four big guns of Irish golf hogged the pre-tournament headlines and, in truth, most of the galleries, but there’s another quartet of Irish men who turned heads in Killarney yesterday.

So how did amateurs Paul Cutler, Alan Dunbar, Kevin Phelan and Dermot McElroy fare? How about this: -2, -1, +1 and +1 respectively, one shot better on aggregate than the combined total of Messrs McDowell, Clarke, Harrington and McIroy.

Not so much the new face of Irish golf as the fresh faces. At 22 Paul Cutler is the elder lemon, two years older than Dunbar and Phelan, McElroy the baby of the bunch, turned 18 last month. But forget about age — these guys can all play.
