US Open misses an old favourite

TIGER WOODS was in his first year as a professional the last time the US Open stopped by Congressional Country Club in 1997.

Woods was 21 years old and had just won his first major in record-breaking style at Augusta National, winning the Masters at 18 under par.

That success was not repeated at Congressional as the Californian wonder kid was brought down to earth with a tie for 19 finish but it was his best US Open finish in three attempts and there have been 14 subsequent appearances garnering three victories.
