DANIELLE MCVEIGH produced a brilliant singles performance in Boston last night to clinch a splendid Curtis Cup point but it was all in vain as Great Britain and Ireland’s woeful record in the bi-ennial transatlantic clash goes on.

They have not won since 1996 at Killarney and this time at the Essex County Club flattered to deceive as a first day lead disappeared without trace on Saturday when they suffered a nightmare of losing all six matches.

This meant that the USA led 8½-3½ and required just one and a half points from the eight final day singles to retain the trophy. When Rachael Jennings lost to Jennifer Johnson the contest was over. In the end the USA won 12½-7½.
