I’ll suit myself, says Garcia despite Monty’s Ryder Cup rallying call

SERGIO GARCIA insisted yesterday he will again be doing what suits him next year — even if Ryder Cup captain Colin Montgomerie would prefer him to be somewhere else.

Garcia has not played in the European Tour’s flagship PGA Championship at Wentworth since 2000, but Montgomerie has said: “I feel every European that is qualified for that event should be playing and I will be asking for that in my role.”

He is also keen for them to appear at Celtic Manor in the Wales Open, an event Garcia has never played, so they are familiar with the course before Ryder Cup week.

But on the eve of the Volvo World Match Play in Spain, Garcia commented: “If it fits in my schedule I will definitely make an effort. It if doesn’t, you know, I’ll have to play wherever it fits my schedule.

“I haven’t looked at it yet, so I can’t answer that one. He hasn’t talked to me yet, so maybe he doesn’t think I’m going to make it.”

Meanwhile, Ernie Els has slammed the European Tour’s decision to co-sanction this week’s Barclays Singapore Open at the same time as the Volvo World Match Play Championship in Spain.

With the World Match Play taking a break from the schedule last year, Els is the defending champion having won the event at Wentworth in 2007.

But due to his contractual obligations to play in Singapore, the South African will be unable to challenge for an eighth World Match Play title in Spain this week and will tee-off at Sentosa Golf Club today at the Singapore Open which is being co-sanctioned by the European Tour and Asian Tour for the first time this year.

Els is also still upset after his obligations in Singapore forced him to miss the season-ending Volvo Masters in 2007 meaning his was unable to add to his earnings on the European Tour and missed out on a third Order of Merit title as Justin Rose won in Spain to claim his first.

“We have controversy this week because of the Match Play which they have put up against the Singapore Open. I do not understand that, it is a tournament I won seven times.”
