Douglas make amends as Edenmore secure double
Senior foursomes winners Douglas were on a mission of atonement after losing out at the semi-final stage last year to eventual winners Co Louth. However they wore the mantle of favouritism lightly in the decider against Co Antrim’s Ballycastle.
Conceding shots in all matches Douglas were well prepared and experienced enough to focus on the task in hand. Young Karen O’Neill and Deirdre O’Hanlon had an impressive start and were 4 up after 9 and went on to win 6&5.
Equally impressive for Douglas was former Irish team captain Eavan Higgins, playing off 2, with her partner Wendy Daly who turned 3 up and closed out the match on the 15th to take the title Lee side.
Edenmore Golf Club completed a commendable double in winning the Junior Foursomes final to follow up on Friday’s Intermediate Cup victory. Edenmore, only 14 years in existence, with only 50 playing ladies to select from, impressed all week at Royal Tara. Cherry Logan and Zoe Allen doubled up on both teams, playing six matches over three days – and winning five out of six.
Castletroy got the better of Mullingar to win the Challenge Cup, which made amends for losing out in the quarter final of the Minor Cup earlier in the week.
Again, it was a closely contested and exciting final, with two matches a piece and the last match all square playing the par 5 eighteenth. Castletroy’s Aisling Murphy was on the green in four with opponent Bernadette Solan on in one more.
Aisling held her nerve putting to win the hole and receive rapturous applause for the well supported Limerick team.
