The R&A championship secretary David Hill is a native of Portrush and he is in love with the idea of bringing the Open back for the first time since Max Faulkner triumphed there in 1951. However, on investigation came to the conclusion it didn’t have the infrastructure to put on a show of such massive proportions.

Nevertheless, he seems to see corollaries with Turnberry and that could be a sign that things are changing in favour of Portrush.
