Barton glory for Co Sligo as Woods lifts Banbridge

CO SLIGO comfortably disposed of Limerick by seven holes in a one-sided Bulmers Barton Shield final at Enniscrone yesterday.

And if Tiger Woods made a shock first round exit at Wentworth, it was a glory day for his namesake, Trevor, who clinched Banbridge’s first Bulmers Irish Junior Cup when he won the 18th against the Castle’s Ronan Burke in the vital match and then got home at the first extra hole.

Even without the unavailable Cian McNamara, Limerick had looked a decent bet against Co Sligo but they never recovered from losing the first two holes in the top match and the opening three in the second.

David Dunne and Serryth Heavey picked up their fourth medals in this, the Irish club foursomes championship, as they defeated Michael O’Kelly and Dermot Morris by three holes. Ken Kearney, another four times winner in the Barton Shield, and newcomer Keith O’Neill had four holes to spare over Pat Murray.

Cork Golf Club go in search of their sixth Irish Senior Cup this morning when they clash with Ulster champions Knock. Whereas they are putting out a quintet of vast experience, Knock are something of an unknown quantity, with the notable exception of former East and North of Ireland champion Michael Sinclair. It will be a surprise if Cork don’t go forward to tomorrow’s final.

It could be a close run thing in the other semi-final involving The Island and Galway.
