Captain Langer keeping his Ryder Cup playing options open

BERNHARD LANGER yesterday refused to rule out giving up the Ryder Cup captaincy if he looked like qualifying for the team.

Langer has been chosen to lead the European team at Oakland Hills in Detroit next year as they try to retain the trophy won in memorable style at The Belfry last September.

But while he conceded it is impossible to combine the roles of player and captain, the veteran German has not abandoned the idea of equalling Nick Faldo’s record of 11 cup appearances.
