On Tuesday, Harrington had spoken of how much it meant to the Americans to win the 1999 confrontation at Brookline, which was why they celebrated so enthusiastically on the 17th green after Justin Leonard’s crucial putt against Jose-Maria Olazabal.

“Eventually, we got the Ryder Cup to a point where the US team wants to win every bit as much as the European team,” said Harrington.
