Nelson in Classic comeback

Larry Nelson completed a comeback with a six-foot birdie putt on the first play-off hole to win the Champions Tour’s Administaff Small Business Classic.

Seven shots off the lead when play began, he fired an eight-under-par 64 and was the leader in the clubhouse when Hale Irwin hit a short birdie putt at the par-five 18th hole to force the play-off.

Both golfers went back to the 18th tee and hit solid drives. Nelson’s approach found a bunker and Irwin’s approach landed behind the green on the fringe, leaving him with a 50-foot downhill putt.

Irwin left his putt about 15 feet short and Nelson chipped out of the bunker to about five feet. After Irwin missed, Nelson sank his putt to collect the £134,000 first prize.
