NICK FALDO yesterday revealed he intends to play in the next Ryder Cup rather than captain Europe.

“I’m officially withdrawing my unofficial application,” said Faldo unexpectedly after a disappointing opening round of 75 at St Andrews in the three-course Dunhill Links Championship.

The 45-year-old, holder of more cup caps than anyone in history, wants Sam Torrance to continue in the job after guiding the side to a magnificent victory over the United States at The Belfry on Sunday.
