Colin Montgomerie is far from alone, in fact he may speak for the majority, when he says that the first major of the season is the easiest of the four to win simply because of the number of genuine title contenders in the field.

But to do it and he hasn't even come close yet in 12 attempts the 40-year-old Scot has to conquer what Padraig Harrington calls the sternest test of all.
