Tower of strength

Another John Brophy was in the news at the weekend as the Clonmel native, now Tower, Co Cork-based, used his years of experience to overcome the youthful Kevin Jer O'Sullivan (Glengarriff) in a terrific final of the Ford sponsored Cork Junior Scratch Trophy at Muskerry.

Tower of strength

Brophy, a member of the host club, had performed impressively in his five earlier matches since Friday and in Sunday's decider had a tonic start - two to the good after just three holes.

However, O'Sullivan, son of the Adrigole and Cork football legend of the same name, displayed fighting qualities and was back on level terms following birdies at the 7th and 8th.

Brophy did well to halve the next before striking a crucial blow at the par three 15th when a glorious six iron finished eight feet from the flag. He edged ahead there and maintained the advantage to the finish.
