NEWLY selected Walker Cup players Colm Moriarty (Athlone) and Noel Fox (Portmarnock) have been withdrawn from the Mens Interprovincial series which gets underway at Ballybunion this morning.

The pair were to lead Connacht and Leinster respectively but the Walker Cup bosses requested them to omit Ballybunion from their schedule as to attend a training session with the rest of the Great Britain and Ireland squad in England tomorrow.

Into their places come Michael McHugh of Ballinasloe and Alan Dowling of Hermitage.

While it is disappointing that two of the big guns will not be taking part, there will, nevertheless, be a quality field in action - all bidding for selection on the Irish team for the Home International Tournament which takes place at the same venue next month.

Meanwhile, Newcastle West take on Clonmel in the first semi-final of the Irish Junior Cup (Munster section) at Shannon Golf Club next Saturday.

They play Clonmel in the first semi-final and the other semi finalists are Nenagh and East Cork.

Newcastle have never won out in Munster and it is years since they mounted a serious challenge. Michael Lyons, a Newcastle stalwart in the 1950’s, now living in Ennis, recalls a narrow loss to eventual All-Ireland winners Muskerry in 1954.

He is the only survivor of this team, which also included David Kennedy and Michael Cussen. Later, in 1966, Douglas beat Newcastle in the Munster finals in Killarney. The Newcastle team was Michael Hayes, Michael P. Murphy, Bobbie Cussen, the late P.G. Lyons, and John Cussen.

Bobbie Cussen is the link with the 1966 team and is rolling back the years with some vintage golf. This will be a big day for Newcastle and maybe they can go one better this time and lift the Pennant. They certainly are well prepared under the guidance of Team Manager, Selector, and all-round Supremo, Michael Condon.

Newcastle Panel: John Cussen Jnr., Douglas Coughlan, Patrick Sheehy, Bobbie Cussen, Brian Lenihan, Mossie Stack, Joe Cussen.
