IAN WOOSNAM believes his experience as Ryder Cup vice captain makes him the ideal candidate to succeed Sam Torrance.

Woosnam yesterday confirmed his interest in becoming captain at Oakland Hills in 2004 when Europe will defend the trophy won in such thrilling style at The Belfry.

Woosnam had originally intended to wait until the contest is staged in Wales for the first time in 2010, but accepts Torrance’s argument that, by then 52, he would be too out of touch with the players on his team.
