Down on his luck Monty not ready to give up in tough times

COLIN MONTGOMERIE hasn't always been the easiest man to like. Dour, rude, unpleasant, spoiled, even offensive, are all words that have been attributed to him over the years.

So when he's down on his luck, as he is right now, it is perhaps understandable that many will find it difficult to look within themselves and find a semblance of sympathy.

However, if you had been standing outside the scorer's hut at St Leon-Rot at lunchtime yesterday, only the stoniest of hearts would not have felt sorry for a man in the early throes of a messy and much publicised divorce.
