Walsh teams up with Barrett to win Open title

HARBOUR POINT 18 handicapper Eileen Walsh, the only lady in the field, teamed up with John Barrett an 11 handicapper at Fermoy to win the Fota Island Golf Club Winter Open Fourball Series Final on a day when the windy conditions proved a mighty test.

The winners scored 43 points to win on a count back from the Thurles pairing of Matt Cronin and Jim Stokes. Some 22 pairs contested yesterday's decider and since the qualifying series began last October over 900 played over the Fota Course.

The winners received two tickets each for a day at the WGC American Express Championship at Mount Juliet, September 30 to October 3. .

The runners-up received two tickets to the tournament on a day of their choice.

The prizewinners were:

1st Eileen Walsh (18) and John Barrett (11), Fermoy 43 points.

2: Matt Cronin (11) and Jim Stokes (10) Thurles.

3: Jim Lennon (9) and Eddie Pepper (12) Harbour Point 42 points.

4: Matt O'Callaghan (10) Fermoy and Michael Hayes (9) Cork 42 points.

5: Darragh Nolan (12) Monkstown and Kieran Walsh (13) Rosslare 41 points.
