McGinley wants Seve trophy to continue

RYDER CUP hero Paul McGinley has welcomed the news that there should be a chance for him to play more team golf at the end of this season.

McGinley wants Seve trophy to continue

The Seve Trophy match in which a 10-strong Britain and Ireland side take on Continental Europe does not appear on the current European Tour schedule of events.

But talks are under way with the El Saler club in Valencia to stage the contest on November 7 to 9, the week after the Volvo Masters at Valderrama.

"Nothing is confirmed yet, but the people there are really pushing to set it up there and obviously it will be a fantastic venue," said Seve Ballesteros, in whose honour the match was founded.

McGinley was part of the winning Britain and Ireland team at Druids Glen in Ireland two years ago and said: "I'm delighted it looks like continuing.

"It was very enjoyable and also helped me when it came to the Ryder Cup.

The Americans have the Presidents Cup in non-Ryder Cup years and I think it's very important we have something too.

"Now the biggest problem is going to be getting back into the team!"

The event was launched at Sunningdale four years ago and Continental captain Ballesteros has helped it to hit the headlines by beating opposite number Colin Montgomerie in both their singles clashes so far.

"It's been very successful and I'm sure it will be again," added Ballesteros.

"I think it's a great event the attendances have proved that and it's more than likely that BBC television will be covering the tournament. That way it reaches every home in the UK."

Ballesteros criticised Sergio Garcia for not playing in the last match, but it is not certain that Garcia will be available this year either.

"It clashes with the Tour Championship in America, so I don't know," said Garcia.

To play in the Tour Championship he has to be in the top 30 money-winners in the States this season and at the moment he is not even in the top 100.
