AS I left Washington yesterday and made my way to Pinehurst for this week’s US Open, it seemed an ideal moment to reflect on the season to date.

However, I quickly concluded that I wouldn't be all that happy were it not for my victory in the Honda Classic. Don't get me wrong. I've been saying for some time my game is progressing the way I want and nothing has changed in that respect. It's just I need to have my A-game and my focus working in sync and I'm finding it hard to put all the pieces together.

I can understand people wondering if my failure to make the cut at Congressional over the weekend and some other recent disappointments can be attributed to my father's illness. I really don't know, except to say I'm fine when I'm out on the golf course.
