Bland windfall Open des Volcans Challenge

Englishman Richard Bland battled gale force winds to take a two stroke lead at the European Challenge Tour’s Open des Volcans Challenge de France.

The 31-year-old shot a two under 69 and was the only player to break par at the Golf des Volcans course in Clermont Ferrand, and lead Frenchman Marc Pendaries by two shots.

Bland, who won the 2001 Challenge Tour Grand Final to secure his place on the 2002 European Tour, was happy with his opening round on a course he has always enjoyed.

“I think those are the windiest conditions I have ever played in,” said Bland after a round that included four birdies and just two dropped shots.

“It felt gale force out there at times, so I was very pleased to get round in 69 given the conditions.”
