CRAIG Stadler won the Bank of America Championship in Massachusetts after a superb eight-under-par final round of 64 saw him overhaul Tom Purtzer.

Stadler began the day in a tie for seventh four strokes off Purtzer but he played the first 15 holes in eight under and birdied the par-five 18th to finish at 15 under on 201.

Purtzer, who had a pair of bogeys in the opening 11 holes, needed to birdie the 17th and 18th to force a play-off.
