Éire Óg wrap up LGFA semi-final place with win over Clon

The Glanmire team that defeated Castlehaven in Group 2 of the Cork Credit Union Cork LGFA SFC at Union Hall last Sunday.

Defending county champions Éire Óg sealed their place in the semi-finals of the Cork Credit Unions Cork LGFA senior A championship with a 1-15 to 1-7 home win over Clonakilty, their third win in four outings. 

Laura Cleary was on top form, registering 1-6. Éire Óg’s other scores came via Méabh Kelleher, Aoife Rodgers, Sadhbh McGoldrick, Orlaith Cahalane, Shauna Cronin and Erin Healy.

Síofra Pattwell (0-4), Sinead O’Donovan (1-1), Moira Barrett and Ashling Hutchings (0-1 each) replied for Clon.

Kinsale and St Val’s meeting in Kinsale concerned matters at the opposite end of Group 1.

A goal down at the break, St Val’s came out on top following a titanic battle, 2-14 to 3-9. Laura Buttimer top scored for the winners with 1-5 and Alice Buckley added a goal. Ciara McCarthy (0-6), Amy Sheppard, Rachel Hurley and Lily O’Shea (0-1 each) completed St Val’s total.

A disappointed Kinsale had Catherine Murphy (1-2), Caoimhe Horgan (0-4), Áine Kearney, Jenny Murphy (1-0 each), Abbey O’Brien (0-2) and Kate Redmond (0-1) on their scoresheet.

In Group 2, Aghada had already wrapped up top spot and Naomh Abán joined them in the semis with a 2-13 to 0-8 success over O’Donovan Rossa in Skibbereen.

Abbie Scannell (1-3) and Lydia McDonagh (0-4) provided the bulk of the winners’ scores. Grace Murphy (1-0), Joanne Kelly, Rosie Corkery, Roisín Lehane and Grainne Lucey were also on target.

O’Donovan Rossa concluded their group phase without a point. Éabha O’Donovan scored four points with Sarah Hurley (0-2), Orla McCarthy and Triona Murphy also contributing.

Glanmire travelled to west Cork for their final Group 2 clash with Castlehaven in Union Hall. Both sides were on three points but it was Glanmire who emerged with a narrow 2-9 to 0-14 triumph.

Lucy Greene and Niamh McAllen’s (1-1 each) scores were vital to the outcome. Ashling McAllen (0-3), Orlaith Roche (0-2), Michelle Barry and Aoife Treacy (0-1 each) also got their names on Glanmire’s scoresheet.

Despite the loss, Castlehaven’s Mairead O’Driscoll kicked eight points. Niamh O’Sullivan (0-3), Ellen Connolly and Amy McCarthy were also amongst the Haven’s contributors.

In the semis, Éire Óg will host Naomh Abán and Aghada will be at home to Mourneabbey. 

The senior B county semi-finals have pitted Glanmire against St Val’s and Clonakilty against Castlehaven.

O’Donovan Rossa and Kinsale will meet to decide who stays up in these senior championship and who drops down to next year’s intermediate grade.
