Cork LGFA: Aghada and Mourneabbey book semi-finals spot

Aghada and Mourneabbey confirmed their places in the Cork Credit Unions Cork LGFA senior A football championship county semi-finals on Sunday.

There was a lot on the line in this past weekend’s penultimate round of senior championship group games.

This year, the top two in each group progress to the senior A county semi-finals. Third and fourth placed clubs contest the senior B semi-finals while the bottom two meet in a relegation play-off.

Last year’s beaten finalists, Aghada, wrapped up their Group 2 campaign with a fourth victory in as many games.

Eric Smith’s dominant side are through to the last four of the senior A championship following a convincing 5-11 to 1-6 win at home to Castlehaven.

Kaitlin Smith top scored for the winners with a hat-trick of goals, 3-2. Emma Farmer and Mary Leahy added 1-1 apiece. Rachel Leahy, Abigail Ring, Róisín Phelan, Brianna Smith and Maisie McRae also featured on the winners’ scoresheet.

A determined Castlehaven effort wasn’t enough to prevent a second loss in three group outings. Chloe McCarthy netted the Union Hall-Castletownshend club’s goal with Ellen Connolly, Áine Daly and Shelly Daly also on target.

Elsewhere in Group 2, Glanmire and O’Donovan Rossa met in a pivotal fixture at the Pike, Sallybrook.

Neither side had registered a point, heightening the importance of getting off the mark and avoiding a potential relegation dogfight.

It was Glanmire who emerged victorious following a 2-8 to 0-7 win in which Niamh McAllen and Ellen Baker raised green flags.

Ashling McAllen converted four frees to lift Glanmire off the foot of the table.

A stirring second half performance wasn’t enough for O’Donovan Rossa who had Éabha O'Donovan (0-6) and Sinead O’Farrell (0-1) on target.

Next weekend’s final round of Group 2 fixtures sees Castlehaven and Glanmire, each on three points, clashing in West Cork.

Nothing but a win will do for O’Donovan Rossa to avoid a relegation play-off when they face a Naomh Abán side chasing a senior A semi-final berth in Skibbereen.

Into Group 1 of the Cork LGFA SFC where Mourneabbey finished off their opening phase fixtures with a resounding 5-13 to 1-8 win over Kinsale.

Ciara O’Sullivan rolled back the years and scored 3-1. Lauren Finnegan, Doireann O’Sullivan (1-3 each), Laura Walsh (0-5) and Máire O’Callaghan (0-1) were also on target for the rampant North Cork side.

A tough day at the office saw Kinsale’s Caoimhe Horgan (1-5), Kate Redmond, Abbey O’Brien and Catherine Murphy (0-1 each) reply for the visitors.

Sunday evening’s late throw-in between St Val’s and Éire Óg saw the latter come out on top, thanks to netting six goals in a 6-7 to 1-12 triumph.

That outcome leaves St Val’s rooted to the bottom of the standings and requiring a win away to Kinsale in next Sunday’s final round of Group 1 fixtures.

Éire Óg host Clonakilty on the same day in Ovens. The two clubs are level on six points apiece. Whoever wins that encounter will accompany Mourneabbey into this year’s senior A semi-finals.
