Tipperary move James Woodlock up to U20 role from minors

Woodlock replaces outgoing U20 hurling manager Brendan Cummins, who stepped down earlier this month after five years in the position.

James Woodlock is the new Tipperary U20 hurling manager, moving up from his position as minor boss, where he won two All-Ireland titles.

He replaces outgoing U20 manager Brendan Cummins, who stepped down earlier this month after five years in the position.

Woodlock will have a three-year term in the role - that follows a new three-year term for senior boss Liam Cahill, announced last week.

Drom and Inch clubman Woodlock also won three Munster crowns during his six years in charge of the minors, including this year's. His latest U17 side were just pipped in the All-Ireland final by Limerick, with a goal in added time.

Cummins guided Tipp to the U20 All-Ireland title in 2025 and his current side were defeated in the Munster final by Clare in a penalty shootout.

Woodlock's 2024 side, who were All-Ireland champions, will be due to fully graduate to the U20 ranks in 2027, while Liam Cahill has stated there will be an emphasis on youth in the senior panel over his new term.

The Tipperary GAA statement announcing Woodlock's appointment noted that he would “work closely with the senior management team to ensure strong alignment across Tipperary GAA’s development pathway”.

The Tipperary County Board thanked Brendan Cummins and his management team for "their outstanding contribution over the past five seasons". 

"Under Brendan's leadership, Tipperary enjoyed significant success, capturing one All-Ireland U20 title and two Munster U20 titles, while helping to develop a generation of players who have gone on to represent Tipperary at senior level. His commitment, dedication and service to Tipperary GAA have been greatly appreciated.

"Tipperary GAA wishes James, his management team and all involved with the U20 panel every success over the coming years and looks forward to supporting them as they continue to build on the proud tradition of Tipperary GAA."
