Cork GAA Previews: Glen can make statement against Rockies in pick of the Premier SHC openers

SATURDAY

Cork Premier SHC 

Group 1: Kanturk v Fr O’Neill’s, Kilworth (C Walsh), 7pm 

Given the two city giants who complete Group 1, two points is an absolute must for both sides here, if they have designs of springing an upset and finishing in the top two. Two points is also a must if they wish to stave off potential relegation play-off involvement. Declan Dalton, Kevin O’Sullivan, Rob Cullinane, and the Millerick brothers will spearhead a Fr O’Neill’s side that fell out of Division 1, Brian O’Sullivan and the Walshs will do likewise for Kanturk.

Verdict: Kanturk

Blackrock v Glen Rovers, Páirc Uí Rinn (C McAllister), 7.30pm 

The clash of the weekend. Former Waterford and Cork coach Donal O’Rourke has the whistle out in the Glen this season. Patrick Horgan’s level of influence in this his first season operating exclusively as a club player will be interesting to observe. Blackrock were beaten semi-finalists the last two seasons and so their objective doesn’t need stating. Who can make the early statement?

Verdict: Glen Rovers 

Group 2: Sarsfields v Charleville, Castletownroche (N Fahy), 7pm 

Charleville must take encouragement from the stern opposition they offered Sars in last year’s quarter-final, a game they ended up three adrift of the eventual champions. Cruciate victim Cathal McCarthy is nearing a return for Sars, but this group opener will probably come a fortnight too soon. Craig Leahy and Donnacha McCarthy are expected to be back. Daniel Kearney and Luke Elliott were coming back from injury for the recent League final win, a game they were used off the bench in. The pair could see greater involvement here.

Verdict: Sars 

Group 3: Bride Rovers v Newcestown, Ballincollig (C O’Regan), 7pm 

Such is the sizeable dual crossover between the Newcestown footballers and hurlers, they will go buoyant into this weekend’s hurling opener following the comprehensive football win over Nemo. Bride Rovers, who won Division 2 of the League, know that if they are to extend their stay in the top flight beyond 2026 then this is the fixture where the necessary points can be accumulated. Without being disrespectful, it's unlikely they’ll be accumulated against heavyweights Midleton or the Barrs.

Verdict: Newcestown 

Cork Senior AHC 

Group 1: Blarney v Castlelyons, Riverstown (P O’Mahony), 2pm 

If these two also run into each other on the concluding day, don’t be the least bit surprised. This clash of the last two beaten Senior A finalists should be so informative. Blarney have a fit-again Pádraig Power in their corner, Noel Furlong is no longer in Castlelyons’.

Verdict: Blarney 

Watergrasshill v Ballyhea, Kildorrery (BB Murphy), 7pm 

Having picked up two group wins last year, including maximum points against eventual champions Bride Rovers, but still failed to reach the knockout phase, Watergrasshill will know they are not far away. Ballyhea were relegated from the same Division 4 that Watergrasshill finished third in.

Verdict: Watergrasshill 

Group 2: Na Piarsaigh v Erin’s Own, Páirc Uí Rinn (A Hyland), 5.45pm 

This pair wound up at opposite ends of Division 2. Na Piarsaigh fell into the third tier of League fare, while Erin’s Own responded to Premier Senior relegation with topflight League promotion. Brendan O’Riordan is the new Erin’s Own manager for the 2026 reset.

Verdict: Erin’s Own 

Killeagh v Fermoy, Lisgoold (M Maher), 7pm 

Fermoy were five-point winners when they met in the group phase 12 months ago. Not sure that result will hold. Killeagh’s emerging crop is a year older in their development.

Verdict: Killeagh 

Group 3: Ballinhassig v Courcey Rovers, Kilbrittain (S Stokes), 7pm 

Adam O’Sullivan is once again on the Ballinhassig injury list. Both sides competed at the top end of Division 3. Newly promoted Ballinhassig followed championship rise with a League jump, Courceys just missed out.

Verdict: Ballinhassig 

Carrigtwohill v Inniscarra, Blarney (I McCarthy), 7pm 

Seán Walsh was the fourth-highest scorer in last year’s Senior A championship. His injury-enforced loss to Carrigtwohill is unquantifiable. The onus is now on others to raise their scoring stake.

Verdict: Carrigtwohill 

Cork Premier IHC 

Group 3: Carrigaline v Valley Rovers, Riverstick (W Wallis), 4.30pm 

Two sides eyeing lengthy runs in the third tier. The victor here goes a distance to putting one foot in the knockout phase.

Verdict: Carrigaline

Group 2: Midleton v Mallow, Castlelyons (J Larkin), 6.30pm 

Verdict: Mallow 

Cork Premier JHC 

Group 1: Kilshannig v Nemo Rangers, Glanworth (R King), 4.30pm

Group 2: Cloughduv v St Catherine’s, Shanbally (A Long), 4.30pm

Group 1: Bishopstown v Ballincollig, Ballyanley (B Murphy), 5.15pm 

Bishopstown are hunting a first group win since stunning the Glen, in the Premier Senior ranks, on September 3, 2023.

Verdict: Ballincollig 

Éire Óg v Aghabullogue, Cloughduv (P O’Driscoll), 7pm 

Both will have targeted this fixture as a must for two points given the opposition - Ballincollig and Bishopstown - lying in wait in Rounds 2 and 3.

Verdict: Éire Óg 

Group 2: Castlemartyr v Lisgoold, Midleton (K O’Sullivan), 5.15pm 

Ciarán Joyce’s cruciate injury significantly weakens Castlemartyr’s hand both for this opener and their other group outings.

Verdict: Lisgoold 

Cloyne v Dungourney, Midleton (P Beausang), 7.15pm

The second game in a very attractive East Cork double-header. Cloyne shaded their recent Division 5 League final meeting by the minimum.

Verdict: Cloyne 

Group 3: Kilworth v Ballymartle, Rathcormac (J Bermingham), 2pm 

Respective League form guarantees a Division 3 meeting next year. Ballymartle were relegated from Division 2, Kilworth romped to Division 4 League ribbons.
