'I did have a chat': Mayo and Geelong's Oisín Mullin on All-Ireland final conversation

Oisín Mullin has confirmed that a conversation took place between Mayo and his AFL club, Geelong Cats, about getting him home to play a part in Sunday’s All-Ireland SFC final.

Mullin - currently playing a key role for Geelong having left Ireland at the end of 2021 - approached Cats head coach Chris Scott about the possibility of being part of the Mayo setup for their tilt at ending 75 years of hurt against Kerry at Croke Park last weekend.

The former Mayo footballer explained the situation, noting that he did have a chat with the Mayo management, along with head coach Scott about getting home between the Cats' clash with Melbourne on Friday and the now historic Croker decider.

"I did have a chat with the coach back home, and obviously Chris here," the 26-year-old said. "In the off-season, Geelong did give me an extended period at home, and I was fortunate that Mayo let me join them to train in the off-season as well, so there was that connection there.

"So, the coach just touched base with me from home and had a chat with Scotty... Obviously the circumstances around where we are in the ladder here and the time of season, it just didn't work out."

On Mayo's historic win, Mullin added: "Oh it was massive. It's been 75 years since they won it; there's been so many finals that Mayo have played in and not managed to get over the line. 

"To finally get it done, the whole county has gone into lockdown, the celebrations are off the charts, it looks unbelievable... I was just excited watching on from here and seeing the boys get the result and get it done."
