Seandún find extra time response to edge Carbery

Seandún 1-25 Carbery 0-25 (aet) 

Having been pegged back late in normal time, Seandún responded well in extra time to take victory over Carbery in Tuesday’s Co-op SuperStores Divisions/Colleges Hurling Championship game in Ovens.

The three-point lead that had been wiped out to force the additional 20 minutes was soon restored as Ruairí Quirke points and Seán Daly added two more and they would hold that cushion for the bulk of the additional period, despite good Carbery fees from Mike Cahalane and Shane Murnane.

Ultimately, the south-west division could not find a goal and Seandún – competing for the first time since 2021 – progress to a meeting with Muskerry in August.

In normal time, Carbery had made the early running, with Darren O’Donovan a stand-out, scoring four points from play as they amassed a 0-7 to 0-2 lead by the end of the first quarter.

Seandún did have an early goal chance as Seán Daly forced a turnover and tested Shane Collins, but even at that early stage Seandún were betraying the signs of wastefulness that would result in 19 wides over the hour.

Carbery fashioned a goal opportunity as Jamie Lucey was denied by Conor Harrington but as their scoring rate dropped, Seandún came back into the game. 

Frees from Calvin O’Donovan and a nice Shane O’Donovan point were followed by a good Dylan Barrett individual score to bring them to within a goal – in the midst of that, impressive defending from Carbery’s Seámus Crowley had prevented a Liam Harrington effort.

It was 0-12 to 0-9 to Carbery at the interval, but Seandún got on top on the restart and were level by the 42nd minute as Tomás O’Neill’s pass allowed Barrett to find the net with a low shot.

A second goal almost followed immediately, Collins saving well from Seandún sub David Malone, but despite some cheap wides, the city side hit the front for the first time through Daly.

By the 53rd minute, another from Daly, sandwiched by two from Shane O’Donovan, had them three ahead, 1-16 to 1-16, and they were still three in front as the game moved into injury time.

However, they missed opportunities to make the game save and points from Carbery subs Liam Dooley and Denis Collins closed the gap before Cahalane levelled with a 65th-minute free, despite Seandún protestations over the amount of time added on.
