A broken collarbone has brought an end to Mattie Taylor’s remarkable run of 32 consecutive championship starts for the Cork footballers.

The injury, sustained when introduced as a second-half sub during the Round 6 League win at home to Kildare earlier this month, means Taylor will miss the entire Munster SFC.

Cork open their Munster campaign with a home quarter-final against Limerick on Sunday, April 12, but irrespective of how far Cork progress within the province, it’ll be the All-Ireland series, from mid-May onwards, before half-back Taylor is back in contention for match minutes.

Going right back to the 2019 Munster semi-final against Limerick, Taylor has started every single Cork championship game for the past seven seasons.

“Mattie will miss Sunday and he'll miss the Munster championship as well, unfortunately. He broke his collarbone against Kildare,” revealed manager John Cleary.

Seán Brady, who lined out at corner-back in the win over Kildare, is also nursing an injury and so won't feature against Meath in the Division 2 final, while forward Cathail O’Mahony is dealing with yet another hamstring set-back.

O’Mahony, who made cameo appearances against Offaly and Derry, will be available for the aforementioned Munster championship opener.
