There is plenty of talent in Tipperary and Waterford football, as was demonstrated by CBS High School Clonmel in a superb TUS Corn Uí Mhuirí round three victory at SuperValu Páirc Uí Chaoimh 4G on Monday. A fully merited eight-point win in their first year back in the competition puts them into the knockout draw after finishing second in Group 1, a point behind St Francis College, and a point ahead of Pobalscoil Inbhear Scéine who are out of the running.
Nine different scorers among these future stars, but there was so much ability all over the field.
“The last day we were seven points up against Rochestown and had regrets over that,” manager Paddy O’Gorman said. “So today, we just said no matter what happens, don’t fall asunder in the second half. And they stood up big time.
“We’ve serious talent. A lot of them played with Tipp minors and they’re in the Tipp 20s with me.
“The best thing about this bunch is Waterford and Tipp together. There is great camaraderie, we have great relationships with the clubs.
“Some of them played a county final with Moyle Rovers last night. It is just great we get on so well with the clubs.”
They had to rally from 1-3 to 0-1 behind in the first quarter, after David Grebowiec slotted a goal for Pobalscoil Inbhear Scéine in the fourth minute.
They also lost corner-back Brandon Landers to injury in the warm-up and he was replaced by Oisín O’Reilly.
But once Luke Foley kicked a monstrous two-pointer free near the sideline in the 15th minute, the Tipp school turned in a terrific performance.
Joint-captain Luke Hannigan scored a marvellous individual goal a minute later to go into the lead - a lead they would not relinquish.
Joint-captain Mikey McGuire’s unstoppable stop, following a one-two with Conor Freaney, opened up a 2-6 to 1-4 advantage in the 20th minute.
Aidan O’Sullivan rounded his marker and goaled to bring the Kenmare side into contention, they arrived at the interval 2-8 to 2-4 in arrears.
Having won the toss and elected to play against the wind, CBS HS Clonmel restarted with an opportunist Finn Napier green flag.
Pobalscoil Inbhear Scéine, didn’t score during the third quarter, but when Oisín O’Connor found the net - he led their scoring with 1-9 - it was a more manageable 3-9 to 3-6.
Clonmel’s mental resilience kicked in again and Freaney doubled their advantage with his side’s fourth major.
Demonstrating their strength in depth, Jamal Yousif came off the bench and was fouled for a penalty in stoppage, which Dylan McCormack coolly put away.
“This is not bonus territory for us. This is where we want Tipp football to be. Plenty of footballers in Tipperary and Waterford,” assured O’Gorman.
