Corn Uí Mhuirí: Pobalscoil Inbhear Scéine, Kenmare 2-14 (2-0-14) St Flannan’s College 1-12 (1-3-6)

Full-back Jack Sweeney kicked the vital 1-1 to get Pobalscoil Inbhear Scéine past the challenge of St Flannan’s at a rainy Banteer.

Despite the slippery conditions, the Kenmare school accumulated their entire 2-14 total from play to move top of the Corn Uí Mhuirí Group 1 on score difference ahead of St Francis College, Rochestown.

They still need a result from the final-round clash against High School Clonmel to secure their progress.

Flannan’s fought to the bitter end, but this five-point defeat saw them eliminated.

Micheál O’Mahony opened the scoring for Scéine before Flannan’s took their only lead through Danny Lyne’s two-point free.

Scéine were able to pin Flannan’s in on their kick-outs and from that platform, they reeled off 1-4 without reply. Liam Brown kicked two points off his left, Aidan O’Sullivan added another on the turn, and David Grebowiec lashed a goal chance over the bar.

In the 18th minute, Kieran O’Sullivan’s kick pass opened up the space for Aidan O’Sullivan to turn his marker and dispatch a lethal finish low to the net. 1-5 to 0-2.

Liam Keane's clever fist pass allowed Thomas Hehir to clip a settling point from an acute angle. When Keane landed back-to-back points, blocking down a Kenmare opponent for his second, Flannan’s had cancelled out the goal.

Liam O’Sullivan blocked down Keane's next effort. Before long, the Scéine centre-back was charging forward to skin a defender and curl over. From the subsequent kick-out, Aidan O’Sullivan added another.

Flannan’s nullified those scores with a wonderful outside-of-the-boot two-pointer from Trevor Moore.

But superb defensive work from Ruairí Daly, winning a turnover and taking solo-and-gos both times he was fouled, led to Brown’s third. Liam O’Sullivan made it 1-9 to 0-7 at half-time. Another Daly turnover resulted in Brown’s next score on the resumption.

Flannan’s dug in. Hehir kicked a tidy point before the 38th-minute goal. Patrick Finneran’s two-point attempt dropped short, but Darragh Monaghan fought to win possession and laid off for Hehir’s calm finish. The gap was two; 1-10 to 1-8.

Within three minutes, Scéine struck back. Full-back Jack Sweeney was involved at the start and finish of an end-to-end move to roll the ball to the net. Midfielder Kieran O’Sullivan claimed his second assist in the process.

Cian McAllister denied Oisín O’Connor another green flag, but Darragh Murphy, Liam, and Aidan O’Sullivan kicked three points in a row.

Flannan’s finished strongly. Hehir came close to a second goal, only for Ewan McCarthy to deflect his effort around the post. Lyne converted that 45 and a two-point free before David Loftus pointed. However, Scéine No.3 Sweeney settled any nerves with the final point.
