Roscommon lead way on Champion 15 hurling team of the year

There are seven counties represented on this year's Champion 15 team.

Nickey Rackard Cup winners Roscommon lead the way in this year’s Champion 15 selection, the team of the season for the lower three tiers of the hurling championship.

Roscommon have four players recognised while there are seven counties represented in all. There are three players from Christy Ring Cup winners London included while losing finalists Derry have two. 

Mayo, who lost the Nickey Rackard decider to Roscommon, have three players named on the team while Lory Meagher winners New York, and losing finalists Cavan, each have one player on the team. Pádraig Doyle from Christy Ring Cup side Wicklow is the only player on the team whose county did not reach their championship decider. 

Players from the three competitions were asked to nominate outstanding performers in their grade. An independent selection committee then decided on the final team. 

The awards will be presented at a function in Croke Park on Friday night. The award winners from the Joe McDonagh and Tailteann Cup teams of the year will also be recognised on the night.
