Dingle GAA has confirmed that the development of a new community facility at the club will be named after Micheál Ó Muircheartaigh. The decision to name the facility Áras Mhíchíl Uí Mhuircheartaigh was taken following a unanimous agreement at the September meeting of the club's executive committee.

The new development will include community spaces, meeting spaces, and accessible toilet facilities and will "welcome all our community’s diverse sporting and non-sporting groups of all ages, all genders, and all nationalities and will be a much sought-after social hub for all generations".

Another part of the programme will be the creation of a year-round, all-weather, floodlit training facility.

"This is a much-needed inclusive community initiative that seeks to address chronic facilities deficits here on the Dingle Peninsula," said the club.

The programme of works has been costed at €3.47m with €1.04m already secured. Over €850,000 of the secured funding was raised through community efforts. They will be seeking grant support for the remainder of the sum. Planning permission has been granted by Kerry County Council. The club also say that they have a programme team in place with a "strong track record of delivering multi-million euro change projects".

"Micheál's contribution throughout his lifetime to the promotion of our native language and cultural heritage was nothing short of immense," said Dingle GAA chairperson, Seán Ó Súilleabháin.

"An iconic ambassador that we are privileged to be able to call one of our own. It will be a source of great pride for the people of West Kerry to see his name going above the door of a facility which promises to nurture and promote the very things which meant so much to Micheál."

Welcoming the announcement, Mícheál’s family said: “We are extremely grateful to CLG Daingean Uí Chúis. He loved to support community developments, especially when it came to the promotion of Gaelic games, culture and language. To receive this tribute from his ‘fód dúchais’ is an incredible honour.”
