Cork Premier IFC: Draw with Rockchapel enough for Glanmire to secure quarter-final spot

Cork Premier IFC: Glanmire 0-13 (0-1-11) Rockchapel 1-10 (1-0-10)

It may have ended all square between Glanmire and Rockchapel in their McCarthy Insurance PIFC clash at Ballyclough on Saturday, but it was the former who were the real winners.

Glanmire knew a draw was enough to ensure their passage to the quarter-finals, as nothing less than a win would do for their opponents.

And they have Jack Crowley to thank as he scored from a free a minute into injury time to secure the draw they deserved, particularly on their second half showing.

They were a much-improved side after the break, having played below their high standards in the first half.

They weren’t helped either by several injuries which saw Cathal McCarthy not able to start and he is out for the season with a cruciate ligament injury.

Rockchapel took the lead just 30 seconds in when Jack Curtin pointed and he added a second from a free to double their lead.

Glanmire got off the mark after four minutes when Daniel Molden scored and from the restart they were unlucky not to score a goal, with Daniel Hogan’s effort coming back off the crossbar.

A Molden free had the sides level, 0-2 each, five minutes in, before Rockchapel enjoyed their best spell of the half.

Curtin got his third, with Ciaran Curtin adding a fourth to put two between the sides.

Jack Curtin pointed from another free and Ciaran Curtin made it 0-6 to 0-2. That point came from a slip by Glanmire keeper, Brendan O’Connell, which resulted in him having to leave the pitch.

Harry Jones reduced the gap, before scores from Brian Galvin and Hogan put one between the sides, 0-6 to 0-5.

Jimmy McAuliffe had a great chance of a goal for Rockchapel but his shot went narrowly wide, before his brother Mikey and Seamus Hickey pointed to increase their lead.

Galvin hit back for Glanmire, with Ciaran Curtin replying. Just before half-time Ewan Murphy was black carded for a foul on David Lynch to see his side play at least nine minutes at the start of the second half with 14.

Jones scored just before half time to see Rockchapel lead by 0-9 to 0-7 at the break.

Scores were scarce in the second half, with the first coming after 38 minutes when Galvin scored the only two pointer of the tie, which saw the sides level.

Hogan put Glanmire in front for the first time, before Jack Curtin make it 0-10 each after 41 minutes.

Galvin put his side in front, before what looked like the crucial score came, when Jack Curtin goaled, to make it 1-10 to 0-11 after 47 minutes.

But credit to Glanmire they never threw in the towel and a free from Galvin put one between the sides.

Then a minute into injury time Crowley got the all-important point to see it end level and ensure Glanmire advanced to the knockout stages.
