Thomastown’s 2024 Kilkenny senior championship winning manager Noel Doherty is set to join Derek Lyng’s inter-county set-up as a coach and selector.

The Kilkenny People report Doherty will be proposed for the role at a county board meeting on Monday after serving a six-month suspension.

Doherty was not on the sideline for the latter stages of Thomastown’s success due to a ban he picked up in the final league game against Dicksboro. He had been due to link up with the Kilkenny management team last autumn with Declan Wall in replacing Peter Barry and Conor Phelan to work alongside Lyng and Peter O’Donovan. However, the hefty penalty prevented him from doing so.

The Galmoy man, who brought Thomastown to intermediate and senior titles within 12 months and is expected to remain with the club, had contested the suspension but to no avail.

Meanwhile, the death has occurred of Fionnoula Walsh, the sister of Antrim senior hurler Gerard. O’Donovan Rossa member Fionnoula passed away on Tuesday. In a statement on social media, Antrim GAA posted: “We extend our condolences to Senior Hurler Gerard Walsh, his entire family and friends on hearing the passing of his sister, Fionnuala. Many who know Gerard he is a gentleman and role model on and off the pitch.”
