The Kerry County League Division 3 game between Castlegregory and Ballydonoghue was abandoned after just eighteen minutes when a Ballydonoghue player, Jack Kennelly was injured in an off the ball incident in the fifth minute and the 2018 Kerry All-Ireland Minor medal winner lay stricken on the pitch until an ambulance arrived. He was ferried to hospital with a suspected broken jaw and referee Donal Casey abandoned the game and his match report will now be submitted to the Kerry CCC.
Kennelly is also a leading young greyhound trainer and he trained the winner of the big race, the Kasko A2 Stake final, Charlie and Ben at Tralee on Friday night. Castlegregory led 0-1 to 0-0 when the incident happened.
Meanwhile, with Dr Crokes not playing until next week, it enabled Austin Stacks to make it three wins from three with a one point win over Rathmore and they sit proudly on top of the division one table with four East Kerry sides just two points adrift. Stacks have made a dream start under new manager Darragh Long when his side somehow saw a tremendous late rally by Rathmore who were denied a point losing 2-16 to 2-15.
Stacks must have been counting chickens as they led by nine (2-15 to 2-9) with just over nine left in regulation following second half goals from substitutes Cian Purcell and Gearóid Fitzgerald.
However Brendan O’Keeffe singlehandedly took the fight to Stacks with a personal haul of 0-8 (0-5 frees and a stunning two-pointer to level the contest). Darragh Nagle, Andrew Moynihan and Darragh Rahilly were also on the mark, and suddenly it was a drawn game with the referee checking his watch.
But enter Sean Quilter who kicked the winner from a free to break Rathmore hearts. Andrew and John Moynihan scored the Rathmore goals, but Sean Quilter stole the points in a 0-8 contribution.
Kerins O’Rahillys were unbeaten until they traveled to Glenflesk where they beaten 2-17 to 1-16 by the locals.
The visitors looked good early on as they raced six clear with Conor O’Sullivan hitting 1-2, but Glenflesk thanks to three two pointer and an Ian Roche goal, led 1-11 to 1-8 at half time. Roche struck for an early second half goal as the East Kerry side moved six clear.
Kerins O’Rahillys, who had nine different scorers on the day - Jack Savage finished with 0-6 (including a two-pointer) - did stage a fight back but just came up short. The best sight of the afternoon was that of Darragh Roche back on the field for the final ten minutes.
Killarney Legion were trailing by four points to Kilcummin who led 3-8 to 1-10 as the game reached the final quarter but Legion not only drew level but went on to win 1-22 to 3-10.
Goals from Cian Foley and Chris O’Leary (penalty) helped Kilcummin lead 2-5 to 0-5 at half time. Legion finally got going with Ryan O’Grady kicking some superb points in a game high 0-12, with Finbarr Murphy (0-4) and David O’Sullivan (0-3) also chipping in a great final quarter comeback.
Two draws in the other two games in the top flight with a late John Tyther point grabbing Laune Rangers a 2-13 to 1-16 shares of the spoils against Spa.
The Mid Kerry side led 0-10 to 0-5 with Tyther scoring 0-6 and Stephen Gannon added a brace. Spa hit back in the second half with goals from David Spillane and Cian Tobin who ended up with a 1-8 haul. But Tyther rescued a point for Rangers and he was their star player with a 1-10 contribution.
Glenbeigh Glencar appeared to be on the cusp of a first win when they led Ballymacelligott by six and seven points at different occasions during this entertaining game. But 3-10 apiece was the end result after .
Three late points from Ballymac’s talisman Aidan Breen (2) and Donal Daly, made sure that the visitors gained a first point of the season.
Glenbeigh/Glencar led 1-7 to 1-2 at half time with Sean T Sheahan scoring 1-2 for the home side while Darragh Regan scored Ballymacelligott goal.
The momentum swung one way but mostly the home side’s way in the second half with Keith Moriarty and Fionn O’Sullivan finding the net for the home team, while Jack Joy and Donal Daly responded with goals for Ballymacelligott. Glenbeigh/Glencar looked set for victory leading 3-10 to 2-7, entering the last ten minutes, but Ballymac and Aidan Breen had different ideas.
