A fortnight after collecting All-Ireland senior medals in the Lily Spence Cup, six Portumna Community School players have doubled up with Corn Eithne souvenirs from their junior clash with St Mary’s Charleville in Nenagh.
Kate O’Sullivan, Eve Kenny, captain Niesha Scott, Samantha Hogan, Addyson Darcy and Nessa Bloomer are the six dual medallists and all contributed handsomely to this latest victory for the Galway school who had other stars in Allie Callanan, Tara Power and Jane O’Rourke.
St Mary’s relied heavily on main scorer Orla Troy, Aoife Morrissey and Cara Hickey and their 48th minute goal from Lexie O’Halloran merely left them in the game with an outside chance of causing an upset.
Troy was Charleville’s only scorer in the first half while a goal from Nessa Bloomer in the 25th minute gave Portumna an interval advantage of 1-3 to 0-4.
Points from Kenny (two) and Allie Callanan stretched that lead during the third quarter. Although O’Halloran’s goal closed the gap to a goal, but Portumna were playing the better camogie and eased themselves into a strong position with the last five scores that included three from Eve Kenny and one from half time sub Carrie Pierce.
