Tipperary PRO Jonathan Cullen has taken up a new full-time position in the county board.
Cullen will assist chief executive Murtagh Brennan as fundraising, finance, administration and IT manager. The Loughmore-Castleiney man has been PRO of the board since 2020 having previously chaired the Mid Tipperary board.
The appointment is the latest move by Tipperary GAA to modernise its practices and follows a recommendation made by Billy O’Shea in his 2021 report to appoint a commercial director.
Tipperary are the fourth county in Munster to make an appointment. Sinead O’Keeffe is commercial director of Cork GAA and SuperValu Páirc Uí Chaoimh, while Anthony Morrissey fills the position in Clare and Mark Radley in Waterford. In the early 2010s, Limerick brought on John Loftus as commercial manager.
In his 2024 annual report, Kerry secretary Peter Twiss called on the county to make a similar appointment. “As will be evident in our County Strategic Plan, the need to take on a full-time commercial person would, I believe, be a necessary next step,” he wrote.
“How this works alongside a voluntary-led board will require some thought, but it is obvious that the demands on the volunteer in this most important of areas is too much and very dependent on people having time and skill to build up a coherent and effective structure.”
