'In no way should I ever have said she did it purposely' - Serrano apologises to Taylor
Amanda Serrano, right, butts heads with Katie Taylor during their undisputed super lightweight title bout.
Amanda Serrano has acknowledged her misjudgment in accusing Katie Taylor of purposely headbutting her in their rematch at the AT&T stadium in Texas.
Bray boxer Taylor retained her titles by edging a very close bout where judges Jeremy Hayes (Canada), Nate Palmer (Indiana) and Jess Reyes (Texas) all scored the contest 95-94, but Serrano - who suffered a cut above her right eye - fumed at Taylor's use of the head post-fight.
“Katie kept headbutting me. It’s what she does, using her head, dirty — 100 percent the headbutts were intentional.
“I knew if it went to the judges it would be shady.
“I landed 107 more punches, she got a point deducted and yet I lost 95-94.”
Added Jordan Maldonado, Serrano's trainer: “If headbutting is not included and we get a fair referee, one who knows what he’s doing... there was a lot of headbutting.
“Amanda had 50 fights. The first time she ever got cut was the first fight with Taylor.”Â
Taylor denied employing any illegal tactics but received two warnings and lost a point for a single head-on collision.
Serrano subsequently posted on “Congratulations to Katie.
“Tempers are flared when you’re in the heat of battle and you say things you shouldn’t say. I’m not one to ever disrespect an opponent and these were never my intentions to Katie.
“She and I are cool outside the ring and are the best dance partners in it. In no way should I ever have said she did it purposely.
"I try to be the nicest person I can be but I’m human. "Being emotionally hurt can misguide you in what you say.
“I’m bruised and cut but still healthy.”
