A straight red card for county star Lee Chin just on the interval came back to haunt Faythe Harriers as a dramatic Conor McDonald point deep into additional time handed reigning champions Naomh Eanna a 1-17 to 0-19 victory in their Wexford SHC quarter-final clash at Chadwicks Wexford Park.
Chin who had put a bout of illness behind him to take the field, had led an inspired Harriers first half, contributing 0-7, when following an altercation with keeper Jack Cushe referee James Owens brandished a red card.
Up to then, the Harriers had dominated an out of sorts Naomh Eanna and deservedly led 0-11 to 0-7 at the interval.
Despite their numerical disadvantage, the Wexford town side were on a mission in the second half with sub Luke Murphy inspiring them with three excellent points from play.
The challengers were well on top and still led 0-19 - 0-16 as the game moved into additional time. A late controversial 21-metre free award by referee Owens gave the Gorey town side an opportunity, with Jack Cullen goaling to level the game. And four minutes into added time Conor McDonald lofted over the winning point.
In the opening quarter-final, St. Martin's, inspired by Rory O'Connor's 0-10, comfortably disposed of Ferns St. Aidan's on a 1-20 to 0-14 final scoreline, having led 0-11 to 0-6 at the interval.
Shelmaliers qualified for the semi-finals with a hard-earned 0-14 to 1-8 victory over Crossabeg-Ballymurn in Saturday evening's quarter-final, while St. Anne's and Enniscorthy Rappareers must meet Monday as a floodlight failure led to the deferring of their quarter-final.
Rapparees or St. Anne's (Rathangan) v Shelmaliers; St.Martin's v Naomh Eanna (holders).
