Limerick confirm extent of Peter Casey's injury

AGONY: A Stricken Peter Casey

Peter Casey’s 2024 season is over after he was confirmed to have broken his ankle in Sunday’s Munster SHC Round 2 win over Tipperary.

The Na Piarsaigh man put the game beyond doubt with a goal in the 53rd minute but in doing so suffered the severe injury.

A statement from the Limerick County Board on Monday read: “In the latter stages of the Limerick v Tipperary Munster Senior Hurling Championship fixture yesterday, Peter Casey picked up an injury which forced him to leave the field.

“Following a scan we can confirm that Peter suffered a broken ankle, which will require surgery in the coming days.

“Limerick County Board/Senior Hurling Management team want to wish Peter all the best in his recovery and we will ensure that he receives the best possible care over the coming weeks and beyond as he begins his journey to full recovery and resumption of his playing career.

“We would also like to thank our own Senior Hurling medical team, the Tipperary Senior Hurling Medical team, the Stadium Medics, the Doctors and Staff at UHL and to An Garda Síochána for the care provided to Peter.”

Casey had returned from being suspended for last Sunday week’s win over Clare to score 1-2 and earn the RTÉ man of the match award. The 2021 All-Star tore his cruciate in that year’s All-Ireland final win over Cork having scored five first-half points.

Meanwhile, former Tipperary goalkeeper and manager Ken Hogan has intimated Liam Cahill’s future is on the line in Saturday’s Munster SHC Round 3 game against Waterford.

Speaking on Tipp FM’s “Extra Time” on Monday evening, Hogan said: “We’ve a big four-pointer coming up at the weekend, a huge game for Tipperary, for the future of the management and the future of the players.”

Hogan feels the players have “to take pain for the jersey” and suggests Noel McGrath and Patrick Maher should be started in Walsh Park with Ronan Maher returning to the centre-back slot. “He’s our captain, he’s the launching pad for the team.

“We have to play Noel McGrath, we have to play Bonner Maher. Noel McGrath got player of the year last year in Tipperary. People forget this. They talk about years in the legs and things like that but Noel McGrath, Bonner Maher, Dan McCormack, they’re all younger than John Conlon, TJ Reid, Patrick Horgan, Seamus Harnedy.

“We have this thing in Tipperary that we write players off at 31, 32 years of age. That shouldn’t happen. These are guys who have gone through the mill. They know how to eke out results.”

Ex-Tipperary captain Shane McGrath said the nature of the defeat to Limerick upset Tipperary supporters and that “they didn’t die with their boots on”. He added that it’s “not on” Noel McGrath and Maher to win the game against Waterford but the younger generation. “Show Tipp people that you really want this.”
