Carrigaline prove early form no fluke as they down Barrs in Cork SFL
Ballincollig's Sean Dore chases Douglas' Colm Joyce during Sunday's Cork SFL clash in Ballincollig.
Carrigaline maintained their fine form in Division 1 of Cork's SFL after their fourth win of the campaign ensured that they would occupy top spot at the end of Round 5. That their latest win was against reigning champions, St Finbarr’s, was all the more impressive as the Carrigdhoun side’s response to relegation from last year’s relegation from the Cork Premier SFC continues to impress.
A constant to their fine start to the season has been the form of Éanna Desmond and Brian Coakley and those two men again shone in this 2-13 to 1-9 victory. Desmond cracked home the two goals and also had a point while five of Coakley’s 0-7 haul came from open play. Eoin McGreevey offered the Barr’s main resistance as he kicked 1-3 while veteran Michael Shields tapped over 0-3 as the Togher side suffered their first defeat of the campaign.
Nemo Rangers welcomed Éire Óg to Trabeg and ended up recording a convincing 2-15 to 1-7 win. Paul Kerrigan and Ronan Dalton both struck for 1-4 for the city side as returning Cork star, Mark Cronin, knocked over 0-3. For Éire Óg, Daniel Healy got the goal and Brian Hurley tapped over two points.
Castlehaven clocked up their third win of the campaign when they defeated Cill na Martra by 2-16 to 1-11. Michael Maguire was their top man with 1-2 while Michael Hurley clipped in with 0-4 and Kevin O'Donovan struck for the other goal.
Newcestown picked up their second win of the campaign after they got the better of their West Cork rivals, Carbery Rangers, on Friday night. It was a comfortable win for the home side as their impressive tally of 2-13 was shared across seven players. Eddie Kenneally and Jack Meade did the most damage as they both struck for 1-2 while David Buckley sent over 0-4. For Ross, Darragh Hayes clipped over 0-2 of their 0-7 while John O’Rourke was also on target as they fell to their second defeat of the campaign.
Meanwhile in Ballincollig, a late Colm Joyce free gave Douglas a 2-10 to 1-12 win over the hosts. It was the final score of Joyce's impressive 1-5 haul while Sean O'Leary struck for the other major. Dara Dorgan sniped 0-5 for Ballincollig, while Mark Oldham kicked 0-3 and JP Murphy raised their green flag.
In Division 2, Clonakilty, Dohenys and St Michael’s are all locked on eight points at the top of the table with Clon taking top spot because of their superior scoring difference.
Clon’s rise to the top came as a result of their 2-4 to 0-7 win over Dohenys in Dunmanway. Two early points from Gavin Farr and another from Fionn Herlihy helped the home side into a 0-3 to 0-1 lead after 20 minutes but the game then turned in Clon’s favour when Conor Daly struck for their opening goal. Points from Seán White and Darragh Gough along with a Niall Barrett goal then put the visitors in control of proceedings and though Keith White and Farr had further points for the Dohenys, they couldn’t reel Clon in.
St Michael’s travelled to Brinny and recorded their fourth win over the campaign as they bested Valley Rovers by 0-10 to 0-8. Eric Hegarty, Eoghan Buckley and Andrew Murphy all had a brace of points for Michael’s while Eoin de Búrca and Tom Grainger also impressed. Adam Walsh Murphy, Darragh Murphy and Ciarán McCarthy all kicked 0-2 for the Rovers but it wasn’t to be their night.
Béal Átha ‘n Ghaorthaidh travelled to Knocknagree and looked to have earned themselves a valuable two points as they led by 2-9 to 1-9 in injury time. That they were in that position was thanks to Diarmuid Mac Tomáis and Conchúr Ó Loingsigh who both kicked 1-3 while for Knocknagree, 1-1 from David O’Connor and 0-5 from Eoghan McSweeney gave them a puncher’s chance. That punch then arrived five minutes into added time when McSweeney goaled to level the game at 2-9 each.
O’Donovan Rossa and Kiskeam played out an entertaining encounter on Saturday with the Skibbereen side recording a 2-14 to 2-9 victory. Elliot Connolly scored both of Rossa’s majors while David Shannon and Kevin Davis clipped in with 0-5 and 0-4 respectively. Seán O’Sullivan and Dave Scannell raised the green flags for Kiskeam while Gene Casey clipped over a couple of points.
Finally, Fermoy defeated Clyda Rovers by 1-11 to 0-11 to record their second win as Clyda still search for their's.
