Former Clare senior football star Gary Brennan has transferred to dual Limerick club, Ahane.

Ahane, the home club of his wife Niamh, will welcome the addition of the dual player. Niamh Brennan (nee Mulcahy) enjoyed a glittering career with the Limerick Camogie team and is widely considered among the greatest to represent the Treaty at the code.

Brennan, who retired from Clare duty after the end of the 2020 season, has played for his native Clondegad (football) and Ballyea (hurling).

He was recently on the scoresheet, including a goal, as Ahane got their hurling season up and running in a challenge game.

Under the management of Johnny Meskell, the famous club will be hopeful of reaching the knockout stages after a barren number of seasons on the hurling front.

Plying their trade among the ‘top six’ in the Limerick SHC, the 19-time winners haven’t collected the Daly Cup since 2004 – instead watching Adare, Patrickswell, Na Piarsaigh and others win titles.

The club won 15 of those titles between 1931 and 1948 with the legendary Mick Mackey a key part of those successes.

In football, the 35-year-old becomes eligible for the club's junior side, who operate in the fourth tier Junior A football championship.

He is likely to combine with All-Star brothers, Dan and Tom Morrissey, later in the year, both of whom have lined out in both codes in recent seasons.

Brennan, a secondary school teacher in St. Flannan’s College, Ennis, was part of the management team as the school competed in the Corn Uí Mhuirí earlier this season.

As well as representing both Munster and Ireland thanks to his football exploits, the midfielder received an All-Star nomination in 2016.
