Waterford IHC: Young stars deliver silverware for Brickey Rangers

Brickey Rangers were crowned Waterford intermediate hurling champions for the first time on a scorching Saturday afternoon in Walsh Park.
Déise Under 20 hurler Tom O'Connell struck eleven points (nine frees) while Leaving Cert student Peter Cummins also starred with six points from play. Portlaw tried four different man markers on Cummins. Sean Ronayne chipped in with four points including three in the last quarter.
County footballer Mark Cummins held county hurler DJ Foran to a point from play. Portlaw finished with thirteen men as Foran and Darren Rockett got second yellows in injury time.
"The underage work being done is absolutely ridiculous," remarked Brickeys captain Oran Keevers.
"Every night, we're nearly fighting for a corner of the pitch to train in!"
A Trevor Kiely goal helped Portlaw into a 1-8 to 0-9 lead at the break.
Six players were on target for the Tannery side. On thirteen minutes, Darryl Walsh passed to Kiely who fired the ball into the ground past Jamie Kiely.
Peter Cummins was the danger man for Brickeys with four points from play.
The black and amber outscored their opponents 14-6 in the second period with Tom O'Connell responsible for eight points.
Three late Sean Ronayne efforts wrapped up a famous win. Foran and Rockett got their marching orders in injury time.
