Westmeath GAA has been paying tribute to a referee who passed away suddenly on Monday night, writes Ciara Phelan.

David Hannon, a garda based in Mullingar was due to referee a Westmeath hurling game yesterday.

There was a minute's silence held in the father of three's honour.

Hannon, who was in his 30s, had taken charge of this year's Leinster U17 hurling championship match between Offaly and Dublin.

Westmeath GAA have released a statement offering their condolences to his family and friends.
