But that wasn’t the only extraordinary feat from a game which saw Mayo regain the title for a first time in five years.

At the opposite end of the field to Staunton, full-back Martha Carter broke her hand ten minutes into the game.

But rather than leave the field with the game in its infancy, Carter bravely played on. Indeed she kept going right to the final whistle, being involved in the final play before celebrations began.

“People talk about character – character always wins,” said Mayo manager Frank Browne in paying tribute to the defender’s courage.

“Martha Carter broke her hand after ten minutes but (she showed) real character. No way was she giving up. She was standing and fighting no matter what.

“When you have that character you always have a fighting chance.”
