Byrne broke nose not eye socket, says Gavin
By John Fogarty
Jim Gavin has clarified Dublin footballer Davy Byrne did not sustain a broken eye socket, rather a fractured nose, as a result of a pre-match incident in a challenge game against Armagh last Thursday.
It had been reported the Ballymun Kickhams man picked up the more serious injury as a result of a clash with an Armagh player prior to the ball being throw-in.
Gavin admitted the matter was unfortunate but confirmed Byrne wouldn't be available for Sunday's Leinster final against Westmeath as a result.
"Regrettably, an incident took place before a recent challenge game against Armagh. (It was) disappointing because I think discipline would be a core philosophy of the management teams of both teams involved. Subsequent to that, both players have spoken and they regret what happened and both players are now concentrating on their inter-county careers.
"We spoke to both players and both players have had a chat in recent days together."
