Portumna yesterday overcame Mount Leinster Rangers to claim their fourth All-Ireland Club Hurling title at Croke Park.
The Galway men had eight points to spare over the first-time finalists from Carlow at the finish, thanks largely to stellar performances from forwards Damien and Kevin Hayes and the Cannings, Ollie and Joe.
As the scoreline suggests, Portumna had plenty to spare over the Leinster side in the end, but the opening period especially was a keenly contested affair.
Once Joe Canning began to find his range from frees and the likes of Damien Hayes grew in prominence, Mount Leinster Ranger’s fairytale ending began to look like a tough ask.
There were some high-points for the travelling Carlow supporters to enjoy however as their side fought gallantly, Denis Murphy’s impressive display among them.
Murphy has impressed throughout this season’s championship and while he registered just a solitary point from play yesterday, it was a fantastic score.
