Kilkenny claim semi-final spot in Bord na Móna Walsh Cup

A strong finish ensured an inexperienced Kilkenny side advanced to the last four of the Bord na Móna Walsh Cup following a 0-17 to 0-15 win over NUI Galway at St. John's Park in Kilkenny.

Under 21 boss Richie Mulrooney took charge of the Cats, who fielded none of the side which claimed All-Ireland honours last September.

Kilkenny took an early lead thanks to a Shane Maher point in the second minute, but this would be the only occasion the Cats would lead in the opening half as the students firmly took control.

The hat-trick hero last weekend Niall Burke impressed for NUIG with four first half points, as NUIG took a 0-10 to 0-8 interval lead.

Kilkenny doing well to cut the gap with Richie Reid, John Power and Mark Kelly on target for scores, after NUIG had opened up a five-point lead by the 15th minute.

Burke extended NUIG's lead to four points inside four minutes of the restart with two quick scores.

The sides traded points, before Kilkenny tied the game in the 54th minute thanks to a brace of Power pointed frees and scores also from Shane Donnolly and Reid.

NUIG led by 0-15 to 0-14 with 10 minutes remaining, but another brace of Power points, coupled with a Mark Bergin score helped Kilkenny to a two-point win.

Kilkenny now face the winner of tomorrow's quarter-final between Wexford and Offaly.
